The single best answer to 'I understand the language but I can't speak it'. Not a first app, but often the one that finally breaks the plateau.

Full review

Speak is the clearest example of what AI actually changed about language learning. Its whole surface is a conversation: the app gives you a scenario, you talk, and it responds — then afterwards it shows you what you said, what a native speaker would have said, and why the difference matters.

That feedback loop used to require a paid tutor and a calendar. Doing it at 11pm for the fifteenth time that week, with no embarrassment and no scheduling, is a genuinely new capability, and it targets the exact skill most learners are weakest at.

It is not a complete course. Reading, writing and systematic grammar are thin, the language list is short, and a true beginner will not have enough words to sustain the open-ended format. Start elsewhere, then use Speak the moment you can string sentences together.

FAQ
Does Speak use real AI conversation?

Yes — it runs on OpenAI models and responds to open-ended speech rather than fixed scripts.

Is Speak good for beginners?

Less so. It has beginner courses, but its strength appears once you can already form simple sentences.

Does Speak work offline?

No. Every conversation requires a connection.
