Babbel is the app that behaves most like a textbook you would enjoy using. Each course is written specifically for your language pair, so an English speaker learning German gets explanations aimed at the mistakes English speakers make, not generic ones translated across fourteen courses.
Lessons are short but dense: a dialogue, the vocabulary inside it, a grammar note that explains why the sentence works that way, and then spaced review. That structure is why Babbel learners tend to reach conversational competence faster than gamified alternatives, even though the app is far less addictive.
The limits are real. There is no AI speaking partner in the standard subscription — for live practice you need Babbel Live's group classes, which cost considerably more. And the language list is small and Euro-centric, so if you are learning Japanese, Korean or Arabic, Babbel is simply not an option.
